§ 49-1. Definitions.

  • For the purposes of this chapter, the following words and phrases shall have the meanings respectively ascribed to them by this section:

    Congested district. South High Street extending from the south line of Main Street to the north line of Jefferson Street; Main Street from the east line of Russell Street to the west line of Hope Street; Court Street from the north line of Main Street to the south line of Washington Street; Barton Street from the north line of Main Street to the south line of Washington Street; Washington Street from the east line of Missouri Street to the west line of Hope Street.

    Offering for sale. The display of goods on vehicles or the shouting, crying or soliciting by word of mouth or displayed signs or words, sales of goods, wares or merchandise so displayed or contained in vehicles as described in section 49-2.

    Sale. The transfer of ownership for a consideration or for advertising or good will purposes.

    Solicitors, peddlers, hawkers, itinerant merchants or transient venders of merchandise. Any person who engages in the enterprise of selling goods of any kind or character, merchandise or any salable article or thing by personal solicitations at private homes or residences in the city, and by the method commonly known as house to house solicitations. It shall make no difference insofar as this chapter is concerned whether or not the goods or articles sold are delivered at the time of sale or whether or not the salesman merely takes an order for future delivery.
