§ 19-3. Declaration of candidacy.

  • (a)

    Any person desiring to seek election for any elective office at any general city election may do so by filing a declaration of candidacy with the city clerk between 8:00 a.m. on the sixteenth Tuesday prior to the election and 5:00 p.m. on the eleventh Tuesday prior to the election. Any candidate for elective city office at any general city election must file within said time period. The city clerk shall, before the sixteenth Tuesday prior to any election at which offices are to be filled, notify the general public of the opening filing date, the office or offices to be filled, the proper place for filing and the closing filing date of the election. Such notification shall be accomplished by a legal notice published in at least one (1) newspaper of general circulation in the city. The city clerk shall keep a permanent record of the names of the candidates, the office for which they seek election, the dates of the filings and the order in which the candidates' names shall appear on the ballot as determined under section 19-4 of this Code.

    (b)

    The aforesaid declaration of candidacy shall contain the full name of the candidate, his address and age, the office for which he proposes to be a candidate, the date of the filing and, if nominated and elected to such office, that said candidate will qualify. Such declaration of candidacy shall be in substantially the following form:

    "I, the undersigned, a resident and qualified elector in Ward No. _____ of the City of Jackson, residing at ___________ Street in said city in the County of Cape Girardeau and State of Missouri, do announce myself a candidate for the office of ___________ to be voted for at an election to be held on the first Tuesday in April, ________, and I further declare that if nominated and elected to such office, I will qualify.

    Dated _____ /s/ _____ ."
